The Baby Boomers – and there are LOTS of them – are looking for alternatives to retirement living and nursing facilities. Baby boomers were born between 1944 and 1964, a time of huge population increases following World War II that produced around 76 million babies. This generation grew up in a time of prosperity, an absence of world wars and an exponential growth in science, technology and medicine. Now as senior citizens, the baby boomers are living longer, healthier lives and enjoying longer periods of independent or semi-independent living.
Many retirement complexes and assisted living facilities require a complete surrender of all financial assets, consuming most, if not all, of what seniors have accumulated over their lifetime and intended to leave as an inheritance to their loved ones. Fortunately, Vera Vista Homes’ Granny Pod series offers baby boomers a stylish, luxurious alternative to expensive retirement complexes.
The Granny Pods are small, detached cottages built close to a main house, which allow seniors to live within steps of their family members for companionship. Yet the Granny Pods, similar to guest houses or in-law cottages, maintain privacy and independence for all family members. In addition to the master suite, these models offer a guest quarters designed for a live-in caregiver when the need arises.
The Granny Pod 1, which offers 748 square feet of heated living space, has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It is designed with accessibility for mobility aids and hospital equipment in mind. The design can also accommodate standard safety features such as hand railings, lighted floorboards and a soft floor to minimize damage from falls.
Enter the Granny Pod 1 through a 20-foot by 8-foot screened porch embellished with natural light from the large transom windows in the roof’s A-frame. The screened porch offers the perfect spot for outdoor entertaining and dining. The front door leads you into the cozy living room complete with an inviting gas fireplace. The open-concept 12-foot by 10-foot eat-in kitchen is visible just beyond the living room. Generously filled with upper and lower cabinets, the exposed-beam kitchen tempts the chef in you to try that new recipe you discovered.
The living space divides the bedrooms ensuring privacy for both the master suite and the guest room, both of which have a private patio through sliding glass doors. In the master suite, both the bedroom and bath are 10 feet by 10 feet and wheelchair accessible. The bath offers a whirlpool tub/shower and a linen closet. The bedroom has a generous closet and comfortably holds a queen-sized bed.
The 10-foot by 10-foot guest room, perfect for a live-in caretaker, provides privacy, closet space and next-door access to a full bath with a laundry closet. A queen-sized bed fits nicely into the bedroom leaving plenty of walking space to access the large closet.
When not being used as senior housing, you might use your Granny Pod as a convenient but private two-bedroom guest house. As a rental investment, it is a terrific size for college students or young professionals.
